“Maybe, but I’m the nurse, remember?” Sappha frowned in thought.

“I’m going to telephone Mother this evening. Dr van Duyren suggested that I might be able to see her in London. I must get her to bring me a thick coat and perhaps a couple of dresses.”

Gloria said quickly: “Why do you call Rolf…” then changed her mind and said instead: “Something long, I should think. What have you got?”

They spent a pleasant few minutes discussing clothes until Sappha saw the time and jumped to her feet.

“I must fly! The Baroness is so thrilled and excited that she’s quite capable of doing something silly like trying to walk. See you tomorrow why not come to tea? You know Mrs Mac Fee loves you to call in.”

She bundled herself into her jacket and scarf, said a hasty goodbye and hurried back to the house.

She found her patient just awakened from a refreshing nap and full of plans for the future. It amused Sappha a little that the Baroness had given no more than a passing thought to the actual journey; Rolf had told her that he would arrange everything and it seemed she saw no reason to doubt him. Even when he telephoned later in the evening, her talk was all of seeing her various children again and no word was said about the journey. She arranged with her mother to telephone the next morning before they left surely Rolf would be with them by then, and she could ask.

She packed the next morning, completed her patient’s packing too too and then went for a final walk through Dialach, saying goodbye to the friends she had made there. She would have liked to have taken a run in the Mini, but it had gone that morning perhaps she had been silly to allow Rolf to arrange for it to be sent back to her home it only

meant that when she returned to England she would have to go and fetch it and drive all the way up again—still, she would probably have her mother with her and it didn’t really matter. She walked to the edge of the causeway and stood staring along it. She would have liked to have said goodbye to Mrs MacTadd, but she knew that she couldn’t possibly cross the causeway on her own and there wasn’t a boat in sight. She turned her back on it and fought her way against the wind, suddenly very sad at leaving.

But she wasn’t able to indulge her unhappy thoughts for long, for Gloria was at the Manse when she returned and they all had tea in the baroness’s bedroom while Gloria examined over the gorgeous nighties the Baroness had given her. It was only when Meg came
